Making decisions – 12 June 2017
12th June 2017
On the 10th and 11th June, Slanjayvah Danza was fortunate enough to open its figurative doors and welcome over 40 excellent dancers and performers to audition for the performance element of “6 Feet, 3 Shoes”.
The auditions took place at the Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, on the Saturday, and at the School of Philosophy, Leeds, on the Sunday, and the excitement in the air was palpable all weekend.
Choreographers Jen Wren and Luisa Galan put all those who auditioned through their paces, testing them on their skills in Scottish Step, Flamenco, and Contemporary, as well as their confidence in improvisation and off-the-cuff storytelling.
Although working through all the technical challenges, the dancers overall enjoyed the day, saying that in spite of it being an audition, there was a real sense of fun, inspiration and community.
Jen said, “The dancers interest in the work we are doing was evident which gave us a strong sense of artistic pride in the journey we are taking. The talent, energy and passion those dancers showed us during the auditions was indeed overwhelmingly fierce and at times I had to take a step back to take it all in. Truly we wanted to work with all of them, each of them brought something of value and interest to the weekend and we all had a great experience during the time we spent together. Unfortuantely we are restricted to taking only 3 dancers not only due to funding but because of the current narrative of the underlying thread in the work. It is going to be a hard decision for sure, and, seeing such a large group dancing our rep material has sparked further ideas for involving more dancers in the future, if and where possible. It was our absolute pleasure to have that opportunity to meet and work briefly with such an incredible bunch of dedicated artists.”
